You can’t shoot the arrow and then paint the target when it comes to sound decisions. (and decisions about sound too)
Prototype the abstract.
1
Ask the right questions.
You’ll be asked a few questions to help me tailor my exploration to aim for a few Whys. Things like:
What inspires you?
What sounds are you making already?
What makes you special? A landmark, a heritage, a set of tools, a metal, a color? These can all be translated into sound.
2
Explore.
This is the fun part. I use the findings from 1, to explore all sound possibilities. After locking myself in the sound cave, I come out with an entire library of sounds to discuss. The complete library of sounds I create are indubitable sounds only you could make. I share all of these with you, and you will have exclusive rights to use those sounds.
Also very important is discussions on scenarios; what new experiences can we provide and deliver with sound? With sound design, I can actually design parts that have never existed before, we can also create powerful experiences and unheard-of interactivity.
3
Pick the best ingredients.
We choose together 3-6 of the best sounds to continue working on. Make no mistake, there will be a lot of failures, but this is built into the system of creativity. I think its better to have sounds/sonic ingredients that only you could make.
4
Prototype.
Working with Plug-ins, Virtual Synths, Max/MSP, and Blackberry QNX LiveAmp.
"The sound must seem an echo to the sense."
